The agriculture, forestry, hunting and fishing sector is traditionally strong in the Stara Zagora region. In 2007, the sector generated NSR of BGN 141 mln., compared to BGN 109 mln. in the previous year. There are about 480 companies operating in the sector. The 10 leading companies in the sector have NSR of BGN 31 mln. in total. The companies with the greatest contribution are: Zaara – Yancho Ivanov ET (tobacco growing); the timber company Shipka Les EAD and Agrogarant Service OOD, engaged in subsidiary activities in the plant-growing industry.
The total profit of all companies in the sector is BGN 22 mln., which is BGN 10 mln. more compared to the previous year.  
The farming land area in Stara Zagora district exceeds 2 mln. decares of a total of 5.1 mln. decares of land belonging to the territory of the Stara Zagora region. Approximately 800,000 decares are sown with autumn crops every year. Most of them, approximately 650,000 decares, are sown with wheat. The yields are about 300 kg/decare. The areas where oil-seed sunflower is grown have increased during the past years. The yield of this crop is approximately 130 kg/decare.
80,000 decares are planted with perennial plants. Vineyards are widely spread in the region, comprising 45,000 decares. Plums, peaches and cherries are also grown. The region is unique with its oil-bearing rose, which is grown mostly on lands in the Kazanlak and Pavel Bania municipalities.
Animals of almost all breeds and species typical for Bulgarian stock breeding traditions are being bred within the territory of the Stara Zagora region. The livestock breeding is oriented mostly to milk production, and over 80% of the milk output is cow milk.
