Regional economy


There are 12,200* companies registered and operating within the Stara Zagora District. A few hundred more companies with registrations in other Bulgarian regions have retail stores or/and representative offices in different population centres of the region. In 2006, the number of companies reporting activity in the Stara Zagora District was 11,300. About 10,000 of all companies in the district are micro-companies, i.e. firms/enterprises or traders with up to 9 employees.
The gross output produced by the companies registered in the Stara Zagora Region is worth BGN 4,513 mln., which exceeds by BGN 624 mln. the output reported for the previous year (BGN 3,889 mln.), i.e. 16% growth. The net sales revenues (NSR) of the companies in the Stara Zagora Region total BGN 6,931 mln. and the registered annual growth rate is 18%. The total profit reported by the companies is BGN 528 mln., which is an increase of 30%** compared to the previous year (BGN 406 mln.).
Trade companies are still the most numerous (approximately 5,700), the majority of which are retail sellers.
The 100 top ranked companies in terms of net sales revenues (NSR) in the Stara Zagora region (see page 58) report sales volumes worth BGN 4,180 mln., which represents 12% growth compared to the previous year. The total NSR of the top 100 companies represents 66% of the NSR of all companies registered in the Stara Zagora region, which is BGN 6,931 mln.
The top 5 companies in terms of NSR are engaged in the energy sector: electrical power production and distribution of electrical energy to end-users and to the National Electric Company, as well as coal production for the thermal power plants. Next in the ranking are companies dealing with trade in fuels, brewing, buildings and road construction.
The profit of the top 100 companies totals BGN 337 mln., compared to BGN 294 mln. for the previous year. This is 57% of the overall profit of all companies in the district, amounting to BGN 528 mln.
The top 10 companies in terms of profit are: the three thermal power plants of Maritsa Iztok complex, companies engaged in the wholesale of fuels, textile manufacturing companies, and the two leaders in the food industry in the Stara Zagora District – Zagorka AD brewery and Gradus 1 OOD, a company producing and processing chicken and poultry meat and products.

* Information refers to the fiscal year 2007, based on the official data released by the Regional Statistics Office in January 2009 for companies from the non-financial sector registered within the Stara Zagora District.

** The cited figures refer to companies reporting their activity within the Stara Zagora District. The totals do not include the turnover and profits of branches and local offices of big commercial networks operating in Bulgaria (for food and beverages, fuels, household appliances, etc.). Data related to the local activities of companies registered within other districts of Bulgaria, such as BTC (Bulgarian Telecommunication Company), the mobile network operators, as well as banks, insurance and leasing companies, etc. are not included either.
