The economic indices in the mining and quarrying sector are determined mainly by Mini Maritsa East EAD, which is the largest coal mining company in South-Eastern Europe. Other significant players in the sector are four other companies engaged in the quarrying of sand and clay for the construction industry, of which Inmat OOD and Inermat AD have greater contribution.
In 2008, the Mini Maritsa East EAD output of lignite coals (produced in 3 mines of 240 sq. km. using the open pits method) totalled 24.5 mln. tons. This is a record achievement so far, the production volume exceeding by 0.6 mln. tons that of 2007, and by 3 mln. tons the output for 2006. The planned annual production of coal for 2009 is 25.3 mln. tons.
In 2008, 96 mln. cubic metres of soil were excavated. An important technological process was also completed, namely cutting the coal pillar between mines Troyanovo 1 and Troyanovo North. The company invested BGN 53 mln. in the planned repair works of the existing equipment. The total investments of the company for 2008 amounted to BGN 92 mln. A total investment of BGN 100 mln. is planned for 2009. In the context of the world economic crisis, an anti-crisis plan has been developed, which envisages possible reduction of the investment programme to BGN 58 mln., and of the coal output to 23.8 mln. tons.     
Mini Maritsa East EAD has introduced a quality management system compliant with the requirements of ISO 9001:2000; an environment management system (ISO 14001:2004), and an occupational health and safety management system (ISO 18001:1999). In 2008, the company passed successfully the control audits of all three systems. Mini Maritsa East won the 2008 National Award for Secure Deliveries and Most Effective Company (within the 2008 Annual Energy Efficiency Awards campaign).
Mini Maritsa East is the company with most employees in the Stara Zagora District. As of the beginning of 2009 their number totals 7,500 people. The major area of employment (44%) is as machinery and equipment operators.
Mini Maritsa East EAD completed the fiscal year 2008 with a net profit (after taxation) of over BGN 2.1 mln.(forecast data).
The company has a 10-year licence issued by the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission, to trade in electrical energy and supply electricity to industrial enterprises.
The procedure of selecting an investor for the construction of a 4th thermal power plant within the complex is expected to be finalised in 2009. The TPP will be situated within the territory of Mini Maritsa East EAD.
