Gross Output - BGN 124 mln.
Net Sales Revenues - BGN 128 mln.
Profit - BGN 26 mln.
Approximately 200 companies are operating in the sub-sectors Manufacture of Textile and Textile Products, and Manufacture of Apparel. Their total net sales revenues amount to BGN 128 mln. The companies from the two sub-sectors have earned a total profit of BGN 26 mln. and two of these companies, Katex AD and Runo – Kazanlak AD, are among the top 10 companies in the region in terms of profit.
At the beginning of 2009, one of the leading companies in the sub-sector, Embul Investment AD, laid off 200 members of its staff as part of the measures enforced as a result of the reduced market demand for its products abroad. The company was established with Turkish capital and produces synthetic yarns and fibres. The factory in Stara Zagora exports its products mostly to the USA and the EU member states.
The manufacture of textiles and apparel in the region is very well developed due also to the Kazanlak companies: Bulgaria - K AD (production and trade in weaved cotton and synthetic yarns and fibres), Katex AD and Sevt AD (cotton-type weaving), and Runo - Kazanlak AD (worsted-type wool fibre textiles).
The companies manage to keep their market positions despite the increasing competition of similar products offered by India, China and Korea. The major challenge for these companies in 2009 will be to achieve rapid technological modernisation of their production. Most of their investment programmes for 2009 envision the introduction of energy saving technologies and diversification of their product lines.
The main activity of Runo – Kazanlak AD remains wool processing and the production of wool textiles. The company is also engaged in electrical power production using renewable power sources (water power plants), as well as in heat production for the company’s own needs and for sale to Katex AD. Runo AD has also invested in agriculture, planting 1,000 decares with fruit-trees. For the third quarter of 2008, the company earned a profit of BGN 659,000. In 2009, the company will face new problems related to the abolition of the textile quotas for the World Trade Organisation member states and the increasing competition by Asian companies offering cheaper wool textiles of similar quality. The situation will be further aggravated by the shrinking of world markets due to the global financial crisis. In 2008, Runo – Kazanlak AD sold 35% of its wool products to Katex AD and 65% to Dekotex AD.
Zagora Chorap AD started its activity in the spring of 2005 and since then is constantly increasing its output volumes and net sales revenues. The company manufactures socks and stockings, mostly ladies’ legwear, approximately 1.3 mln. pairs per year.
