The agriculture, forestry, hunting and fishing sector is traditionally strong in the Stara Zagora region. In 2008, the sector generated NSR of BGN 233 mln., compared to BGN 141 mln. in the previous year, i.e. a 65% growth rate. There are about 600 companies operating in the sector. The highest NSR are generated by the chicken breeding companies Millennium 2000 OOD, Zhyuliv OOD and Gradus – 7 OOD, and the swine breeding company Ajax 95 OOD.
Leaders among the grain-growing companies are Farmco System OOD, Zlatex ET, Agraguard – Georgi Nedev ET and Ostrovski Valni OOD. Each of them ranks among the top 10 in the sector in terms of NSR.   
Leading positions are also occupied by the timber company Shipka Les EAD and Agrogarant Service OOD engaged in auxiliary activities in the plant-growing industry.  
The total profit of all companies in the sector is BGN 46 mln., which is more than twice the profit earned in the previous year.
The farming land area in Stara Zagora district exceeds 2 mln. decares of a total of 5.1 mln. decares of land belonging to the territory of the Stara Zagora region. Approximately 800,000 decares are sown with autumn grain crops every year. Most of them, approximately 650,000 decares, are sown with wheat. The average yields are over 3000 kg/ha. During the past years the areas planted with oil-seed sunflower have increased. The yield of this crop is approximately 1300 kg/ha.
8,000 ha are planted with perennial plants. Vineyards of wine varieties are widely spread in the region, comprising 4,500 ha. Plums, peaches and cherries are also grown. The region is unique with its oil-bearing rose, which is grown mostly on lands in the Kazanlak and Pavel Bania municipalities.
Animals of almost all breeds and species typical for Bulgarian stock breeding traditions are being bred within the territory of the Stara Zagora region. The livestock breeding is oriented mostly to milk production, and over 80% of the milk output is cow milk.
